CBP Announces Initiation of Broker Continuing Education Requirement

U.S Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) recently announced the long-awaited start date for the continuing broker education requirement that was added to the broker regulations last year. The key takeaways from CBP’s announcement are as follows:

  • The new requirements will be effective starting January 1, 2025. On that date, CBP will make qualified broker education courses available for completion by individual brokers.
  • Qualified courses will be those (1) provided by CBP itself or other government agencies or (2) third-party courses approved by specific accreditors designated by CBP. An initial list of available qualified continuing broker education opportunities will be posted at CBP.gov.
  • Brokers will need to complete 20 credit hours before the end of the current triennial period on February 1, 2027.
  • Brokers will be required to complete 36 credit hours during each successive triennial period after February 1, 2027.
